Max Bense’s aesthetics originates from an acute awareness of a world where technical progress is no longer a mere accessory but a force that permeates our society. Technique is conceived as a structural dimension of society at large, rather than an attribute of the individual, while art functions both as a marker of societal development and as a realm where material illusion and disillusion are articulated. This article aims to demonstrate how Max Bense’s Information Aesthetics constitutes a philosophical framework that is not only technical but also political and social. We seek to highlight how the themes of civilization, society, and the role of technique are central to the aesthetic approach founded by Max Bense – particularly in relation to the artwork – which he considers essential to the process of civilization.

Abstract

The aesthetics of Ortega y Gasset is part, with originality, of the modernist debate of the first half of the twentieth century. The paper follows the development of Ortega Y Gasset's thought having as focus the essay of 1925 "La deshumanización del arte", in which the Spanish philosopher tries to provide a conceptual synthesis of avant-garde art through a precise theoretical grammar: poetic metaphor, aesthetic object, art as principle of unreality.

The aim of this work was to analyze reported speech units and the gestural units that are produced alongside them. Studies based on corpora and grounded in Language into Act Theory, the theoretical framework adopted in this research, have shown that the boundary zones of gestural units tend to coincide with the prosodic boundaries of speech. Regarding reported speech, Good 2015 observes that when we insert them into the flow of spontaneous speech, we use resources that show their meta-illocutionary character, such as prosodic variation, changes in body posture and also enacted gestures. Thus, it is to be expected that differences in the prosodic and gestural profile will be noticed between unreported to reported speech, and vice versa. In this research, these aspects were analyzed based on a corpus of spontaneous speech, C-ORAL-BGEST, informationally labeled according to the Language into Act Theory, and gesturally labeled according to the guidelines of McNeill 1992, Kendon 2004 and Bressem, Ladewig and Müller 2013. The results seem to show that the change in discursive level, i.e. the transition from the level of the utterance to the level of reported speech, is noticeable not only prosodically, but also gesturally.

Abstract

According to the Language Into Act Theory, Parenthetical units insert in the Utterance information that is placed on a secondary locutive plan with respect to the Topic / Comment relation. They can appear in all but not in the first position of the utterance and are never compositional with another information unit. Because of prosodic similarities, however, Parenthesis placed at the right periphery of the Comment can be confused with Appendix units, which on the contrary express redundant information complementing the Comment. On the basis of the IPIC Information Structure Data-Base the paper explore the reasons which allow their detection in Italian Spontaneous Speech Corpora. Because of their semantic values, Modal evaluations and Metalinguistic commentaries (the large majority of Parenthesis in speech) introduce a jump in the perspective of the utterance, which places them on a secondary locutive plan and can never be Appendixes. On the contrary other types of expressions that can also fill the Parenthetical unit (conjunctions, if-sentences, adverbials and external arguments, long parenthetical) can be in principle also integrations of the Comment. The paper argues that the parenthetical interpretation of these information units will remain under-determined unless the speaker signals this value through prosodic or multimodal cues. Moreover, according to our finding, long parenthesis in the final position are not performed as information units of the utterance but rather as fully autonomous “parenthetical utterance”.

In digital lexicographic projects, the use of persistent identifiers is recommended. This contribution explores the opportunity to adopt Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) as a tool for the dissemination and promotion of a digital lexicographic project, utilizing Crossref as the registration agency. To achieve maximum dissemination, a series of DOIs need to be registered, corresponding to the various hierarchical levels through which the lexicon database is organized. This necessitates the compilation of high-quality metadata that is rich in information.

This article provides a detailed analysis of the DOI registration process, highlighting the necessary and recommended information for dissemination. It exemplifies how to incorporate this information into the tag system specified by the registration schema.

The essay, which is part of a broader research on diasystematic labels in 19th-20th century Italian lexicography, intends to propose an initial study on the use of diaphasic/diastratic labels in the fifth edition of the Vocabolario della Crusca. This microstructural trait can in fact offer important information and indications both for placing, also from a historical point of view, a word, its meaning or a locution in its appropriate level of linguistic variation, and also for getting to know the linguistic ideas behind a certain lexicographic work.

After two decades of theoretical and engineering developments, the history of artificial intelligence is going through a turning point. The spread of neural models in fact represents a game-changer, both in virtue of the incredible possibilities of implementation (from image recognition to language processing), and for the philosophical implications that such diffusion brings with it, from applied ethics to epistemology. This paper intends to start from the latter. The competence of machines with a ‘neuromorphic’ architecture, based on networks of artificial neurons that process information in a sub-symbolic and dynamic manner, could allow us to question certain assumptions of the classical debate on artificial intelligence (and on intelligence in general) regarding the relationship between syntax, meanings and the substrates that carry them. In the sign of an almost century-long tradition of intertwining cognitivist research and AI, this article will attempt to dialectically bring embodied perspectives of the mind and artificial language models into dialogue. It will explore the new, vibrant implications that research and implementation of neural architectures, above all Large Language Models, are bringing to light.

The author found nine handwritten communications from Raffaele Fabretti to Jean de Mabillon in manuscripts Lat. 11919 and Fr. 17678 of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, including two letters, a «mémoire» containing the answer to some questions from Mabillon on the population of the catacombs, two excerpts from Fabretti's epigraphic sylloge, printed in 1699, and several notes containing drawings of inscriptions and other epigraphic information, some of which were incorporated by Mabillon into his Iter Italicum (1687). This dossier provides welcome insight into the early redactional stages of Fabretti's sylloge, his transactional working relationship with Mabillon, and the mutual misunderstandings that were eventually to blow up into a very public confrontation on the matter of the burial practices of ancient Christians.

La collaborazione al A Pilot Project in the Digitisation of Epigraphic Manuscripts (ProDEM). CIL VI 13037 e 19557).

The collaboration on the A Pilot Project in the Digitisation of Epigraphic Manuscripts (ProDEM). Senator Filippo Buonarroti's Papers and Antiquarian Culture under the Last Medicis and the re-examination of codex BMF A43 have reaffirmed the importance and necessity of autoptic consultation of sources. This contribution presents several new developments of an epigraphic nature - for example, the dedication to Silvanus (CIL VI 581), now understood to pertain not to Rome but to Gabii - as well as of a topographical nature (new provenance information, reconsiderations regarding certain urban vineyards). It also highlights a series of other annotations that had remained “hidden” until now (see, for instance, CIL VI 13037 and 19557).

Many studies seem to confirm that reported speech is marked prosodically by perceptive variables such as pitch variation, pause duration, speech rate, higher pitch range, etc.

However, analyzed data extracted from the ORFEO and OFROM data sets, which bring together various corpora of spontaneous speech in French with various styles and geographic origins, show that if monologs are often characterized by a pause introducing the reported segments, it is not at all the case for informal dialogs, where introducing segments are mostly located at the beginning or in the middle of the sentence and integrated in the overall sentence prosodic structure.

The presence of a pause in monologs to signal the occurrence of a reported speech segment in a sentence reflects a “written language bias” linked to the presence of quoting marks in written representations of reported speech.
