This contribution aims to reflect on the nature of the aesthetic experience offered by ex situ conservation institutions, highlighting the risk of associating such places with a superficial, or at least partial, representation of biodiversity. Whilst in zoos and aquariums it is possible to admire certain natural entities (organisms, ecosystems) arranged for human observation, there may nevertheless be a tendency to perceive them through the lens of categories traditionally reserved for art (which, in Western aesthetics, are notably identified with the beautiful and the sublime) and in a primarily visual mode. Some argue that such approaches contribute to an artified representation of nature, that is, to the inappropriate or partial display of natural elements as if they were inanimate, isolable and abstract entities, by analogy with the museum experience of art or artefacts, whilst neglecting fundamental but less visible aspects of biodiversity (such as the vast network of ecological interdependencies). We seek to show that a visual and object-centred model of aesthetics, although seemingly predominant in the experience of ex situ biodiversity, may be ineffective in comprehensively representing not only nature, but also art and culture. We therefore argue in favour of a broader conception of aesthetics, grounded in a multidimensional relationship with the living world.

In this essay, I argue that the study of emotions aroused by natural environments constitutes a field of investigation particularly suited to the pragmatic and interdisciplinary perspective of the Environmental Humanities. First, I briefly illustrate the polysemy of the term biodiversity and the dual use, scientific and value-based, that has characterised it since its emergence.  Next, I show how the concepts of intrinsic value and instrumental value appear in international policy documents for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity. Finally, starting from the debate developed in environmental ethics, I outline a weak notion of intrinsic value based on the characteristic structure of certain emotions.

Max Bense’s aesthetics originates from an acute awareness of a world where technical progress is no longer a mere accessory but a force that permeates our society. Technique is conceived as a structural dimension of society at large, rather than an attribute of the individual, while art functions both as a marker of societal development and as a realm where material illusion and disillusion are articulated. This article aims to demonstrate how Max Bense’s Information Aesthetics constitutes a philosophical framework that is not only technical but also political and social. We seek to highlight how the themes of civilization, society, and the role of technique are central to the aesthetic approach founded by Max Bense – particularly in relation to the artwork – which he considers essential to the process of civilization.

Abstract

The aesthetics of Ortega y Gasset is part, with originality, of the modernist debate of the first half of the twentieth century. The paper follows the development of Ortega Y Gasset's thought having as focus the essay of 1925 "La deshumanización del arte", in which the Spanish philosopher tries to provide a conceptual synthesis of avant-garde art through a precise theoretical grammar: poetic metaphor, aesthetic object, art as principle of unreality.
